KIAMA WOMEN'S SOCCER BEATEN BY BALGOWNIE
Last Sunday the Kiama Women’s cocker Club played Balgownie at Wollongong University and were beaten 4 – 0. The
score was not a true indication of the way the match went as the girls fought all the way.
The real difference between these two sides was mainly concentration and the Kiama girls have got to overcome their tendency to start slowly. It has been a constant problem and cost them games in recent weeks.
Kiama were a mere shadow of themselves in the first half and allowed Balgownie, probably the competitions hottest side, a couple of soft goals to take
them to a 3 – 0 half time score.
But as is now customary, the Kiama girls came out fighting in the second half and dominated Balgownie for long periods. In fact Kiama created three clear-cut goal scoring chances that went begging for a final touch
or toe poke over the line. As often happens in soccer, Balgownie soaked up the pressure and scored a fourth goal
when Kiama had been dominating for so long.
Kiama’s best were Mel Carlson in goals, Danielle Jovanov in the sweepers role and the Kiama Leagues Club Player of the match Sasha Maher at left
fullback.
The girls are yet to record their first win for the season but by the way they have been training in recent weeks, that win is not too far away. The Kiama squad is very young and inexperienced compared to many of their opponents but their commitment is very strong
and will reward the team in the not too distant future.
